Welcome to BeachPatrol and Love Our Street

Our app allows you to record your litter collections and have the results contribute to policy changes

The app

The LitterStopper app enables groups and individuals to collect litter data and share it accurately and effortlessly with other interested parties. This helps to influence policy makers and ultimately protect the environment.  By providing a recording method, users will develop a better understanding of the litter situation, what needs to be done to control it and increase their awareness.

Anyone can use the app; all that is needed is an email address to receive a copy of their submission.   We know many people pick up litter and their valiant efforts go undocumented most of the time. The app now gives them the ability to have it recorded and therefore to know their efforts are contributing to policy decisions regarding our environment.

LitterStopper records up to to 32 of the most commonly littered items. Once the items have been entered, the data is stored on a common database hosted on LitterStopper.com/emaildata. The information on the database is available for anyone to see or download. A summary page on LitterStopper.com also highlights the frequency for which each item is counted.

Since January 2022, litter data has been sent to the Victorian state government's database LitterWatch. This allows the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action to continually review and assess the plastic litter situation.

We've created a library of resources to help get you started:

Litter Recording Options

Four options are available:

  1. No Sorting Clean - simply count the number of bags of rubbish and how many kgs were collected.
  2. Standard BP/LOS Clean - count how many bags and kgs were collected, and then sort the drink bottles and cans and coffee cups & lids and count those too. This data is aimed at supporting Container Deposit Schemes and raising awareness of the high number of littered coffee cups.
  3. Full Audit Clean - collect the bags and weigh how many kgs were collected then sort all the litter into the 32 different categories. This can take some time to perform.
  4. Partial Audit Clean - choose a subset of the 32 available items. For example, you may only want count bottle tops, straws and plastic bottles. The other non selected items will be greyed out, and you won't need to counted and record them.

Registered Groups

Groups who perform frequent cleans can have their groups preregistered in the app. This saves them from re-entering their group information every clean

Other Features of the App

Photos can be added from your photo gallery. The GPS readings of the clean location are recorded. An email copy of the data is automatically sent to the user. Each page has a drop-down menu of instructions.

Manual recording still needs to be done sometimes

Sometimes in inclement weather or when multiple groups are cleaning the one site for example, it is easier to record on a manual recording sheet. Then, simply transfer the data into the app later . A manual recording sheet can be downloaded here.
