Educating our students today will lead to a better tomorrow
BeachPatrol regularly visits primary and secondary schools. We host educational sessions focussing on plastic litter and its impact on the environment and marine life
We can also take students out on a beach or street litter survey experience. During these exercises the students work in small groups along the beach or street to record the litter count and type using BeachPatrol survey sheets.
At the end of the survey the sheets are collated and the students spend time categorising and documenting the litter picked up in that session. This provides a great opportunity for raising awareness and helps inform how to cut back on common problem waste items.

| 08 Sep 2017 | Melbourne City Mission | Vocational training | 10 | These students has asked their instructor about how to deal with cigarette butts around their grounds and outside the local businesses adjacent to their grounds. The instructor invited BeachPatrol in to talk about our butt surveys and what we had seen. |

| 08 May 2017 | Broadmeadows Primary | Year 2 | 60 | With these little children, they were broken up into 4 groups then rotated through 4 different activities. BeachPatrol took them for one of the activities. We used a bucket of plastic beach litter that had been collected the day before, and went through its contents asking the kids what they thought about that type of rubbish item. We discussed things like if they thought many of that item were being littered, if so why? Were the items dangerous to marine life? How to stop using so much plastic in their lunch bags and at home. The spent a few minutes on the beach chasing waves and picking up some bits of plastic. |

There they were to collect beach plastic litter for their 'Creatures of the Bay ' art class. We broke in to groups of 4-5 and cleaned different sections of the beach for 30 mins. Each group had one student note down on a survey sheet what the other students were finding. At the end we added up all the tallies to see which group had collected the most. |

| 22 Apr 2017 | St Kilda Primary | Year 5 | 30 | Today the students and parents went out to join the Elwood Beach clean. They picked up litter off a section of an Elwood beach and Rock groyne for an hour. Bottles and cans were sorted out, counted and recycled. |

We pointed out the common plastic items we find on the beach which were also around their school. The students love to hear stories about wildlife. They are very curious and ask lots of questions. |
