A brilliant team of 5 volunteers from Civica spent an hour and a half cleaning St Kilda Beach, opposite Luna Park. We watched as the council mechanical cleanign process took place just before we started.

The team counted 470 pieces of soft plastic, 97 pieces of hard plastic 19 plastic bottles, 9 glass bottles, 28 cans, 12 cups and a huge pile of other litter. 35 kg in total

Thank you for making such a difference to the marine environment

Twelve terrific volunteers from Trevipay really got stuck into the mess that had washed up on New Beach, Port Melbourne on a windy Wednesday, 10th April. Thankfully the rain stayed away.

The collection of 11 kg  and over 2000 pieces of plastic was dominated by so many small pieces of soft plastic (1262), plastic bags or bits of bags (253), microplastics (116), small hard plastic fragments (105). The team also collected 85 food wrappers, 27 balloons, 23 plastic straws, a towel, a belt, two balls, a golf tee, corks and so much more. Trying to identify just what many pieces once were would challenge an archaeologist we decided!

A lovely bunch of 6 volunteers spent an hour this afternoon cleaning Altona beach.  A total of 13.9kg of rubbish was removed, including 100 cigarette butts.  Great team effort.  Thanks for helping to keep our beach safer for our wildlife.

Blue skies greeted the eager volunteers from Macquarie (including a few who have previously volunteered) who helped clean New Beach near Princes Pier.  The team worked in groups of 3 or 4 and in an hour collected 31kg of rubbish.  Several drink containers and larger items were retrieved on the sand under the pier while smaller pieces of plastic, both hard and soft, were collected from the tideline. 

All in all, a great team effort with a total of 2297 pieces of rubbish removed.  Quite a few seagulls 'supervised' the clean, grateful for the cleaner environment.  Thank you from all of our wildlife! 

Beautiful sunny St Kilda morning with just a light breeze: perfect for these volunteers from Mirvac to help clean up the beach. Council machines had cleaned the main part of the sand, so the volunteers concentrated along the low tide line, along the promenade wall, in the vegetation and on the grass. The grassy area hid lots of cigarette butts, bottle tops and wrappers that had been chopped up by lawn mowers after weekend crowds. The 15 kg of rubbish included over 700 cigarette butts, lots of drink bottles and cans, food wrappers, sauce sachets and fish, hundreds of hard and soft plastic fragments, polystyrene,  cable tie snips, over 150 bottle tops, a syringe, a power cord and a dummy. Lots of broken glass was also picked up. Nearly 2000 pieces of plastic rubbish are now safely binned. Beach goers and our creatures will be a lot happier. Thank you Mirvac

New Beach, near Princes Pier, Port Melbourne was host to a wonderful group of 14 volunteers on a sunny and windy morning.  When first looking at the beach, most everyone wondered what would keep them busy for the next hour as the beach looked pristine.  However, it didn't take them long to realise there were many small pieces 'hidden' in the sand.  A full audit was conducted and a total of 1719 pieces of rubbish were removed.  A great team effort!!  Our seabirds and marine life are that bit safer now.

On a blustery day in Port Melbourne, we were delighted to welcome back another group from Gentrack. The team of 22 colleagues spent over an hour collecting a huge amount of plastic waste from New Beach. The weather conditions made it quite challenging to count the soft plastics, but suffice to say there was a lot of it!

The LitterStopper entry for this event looks something like this:

Another wonderful group of volunteers from Littlepay conducted a clean on New Beach in Port Melbourne.  At the start they all wondered why this beach was chosen as it looked so clean.  After 75 minutes and 3424 counted pieces of plastic were removed, the answer was clear.  The majority of the plastic was small pieces: 483 hard and 472 soft as well as 1179 nurdles (pre-production pellets).  These are more likely to be ingested by our seabirds and marine life, so a big thanks to the team for making their enivronment a safer place!

An energetic group from AustralianSuper arrived at New Beach (near Princes Pier) in Port Melbourne, wondering what they would do for an hour's beach clean as the beach appeared completely clean.  

A full audit was conducted and here are some of the findings: 872 small soft plastic fragments, 477 small hard plastic fragments, 319 nurdles, 161 food wrappers, 117 pieces of polystyrene and 31 straws/pieces of straws.  In total, they removed 2577 pieces of plastic from this 'clean' beach.  Well done to this team!

35 staff came out to clean some streets around South Melbourne.  Amongst other plastic rubbish, they collected 288 littered drink containers over 2 hours.  A great effort to clean the streets.
