Difficult to deal with litter - cream canisters

Volunteers often find large nitrous oxide canisters during clean-ups. These whipped cream canisters may look harmless once empty, but they are actually classified as hazardous pressurised containers and should never be placed in household bins, public bins or standard recycling. Councils including Glen Eira City Council warn that these canisters can explode if compacted in garbage trucks or waste facilities.

Unfortunately, disposal options are still very limited. Even canisters that appear “empty” can retain residual pressure, and people should never attempt to pierce, crush or tamper with them themselves. If you find these items during a clean-up, the safest approach is to carefully separate them from general litter and contact your local council or a licensed hazardous waste provider for advice.

BeachPatrol 3191 in Sandringham has struggled to find safe disposal pathways for 4 whipped cream canisters found on recent clean ups. We are incredibly grateful to local firm Transnitro for agreeing to take these four canisters off our hands and ensure they are disposed of safely and responsibly.
