 Only 23 bottles and cans collected

Cigarette Butt Survey Rouse St Port Melbourne by admin

Some members of 3207 Beachpatrol performed another Cig butt survey along Rouse St in Port Melbourne.  We had performed one along the same St this time last year so were curious to see if there was any difference.  The weather was quite bad with heavy showers on and off so we only surveyed and cleaned approx. 100 m either side of Bay St..  This was a shorter length than last year but captured most of the businesses which is where the littered butts come from  Thanks to the people that turned out.

2150 butts over 200 m of street.  Both sides.  That makes on average 10 butts for every meter of street.   This is appalling behaviour of smokers.

21 bottles and cans also collected.

The Yarra River bank in Port Melbourne by admin

A special clean up was made in March along the south bank of the Yarra river adjacent to Westgate Park.  The clean up was sponsored and administered by  Heidi Taylor of Tangaroa Blue.  They run beach litter clean sups on a large scale in Australia.  Assisted by 3207Beachaptro volunteers and Friends of Westgate park,  a massive 320 kgs of litter were collected along approx. 650 m of river bank.  Heidi has a detailed cataloguing system and all the litter was sorted and categorised.

In summary 35 volunteers picked up and  removed;

11038 separate items  in 39 large sacks.

This included;

611 bottles and cans and recycled
