3193 February Beach Clean

Wow, it was a very wet beach clean on February 1st but we collected so much rubbish! The huge shower hit us about half way through the clean but did not deter the 16 people who turned up. We met at the Black Rock Yacht Club and cleaned the south beach as well as Half Moon. It's very sad the amount of cigarette butts we found. The children focused on picking up as many as they could - more than 400!

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186

Fourteen volunteers did a great job to remove litter from the reserve today. We were delighted to see so many birds, but dismayed by the polystyrene so prevalent in the lake. We were able to show everyone our trophy for being nominated, along with LOS 3188 and Bayside BP groups, for the environmental organisation award, City of Bayside Australia Day. Another organisation took out the award, but it was fantastic to be nominated in our first year of action.

Two reports came in via Litter Stopper since our last group clean. Every little bit counts. One member cleaned up near where there had been a collision in parking bays. Lots of plastic fragments that had not been attended to by those involved. The other member cleaned up a bag of bottles and cans washed into the creek and lake by recent rains. Lots of polystyrene in the lake.

Excellent haul and turnout today. With 26 wonderful volunteers we collected 56(!!) kilos of rubbish and at least 100 containers and botttles and 1,200 cigarette butts. Thanks everyone!

We were hoping to have a new coordinator start, but that didn’t happen, so now we’re looking for a new coordinator again. Feel free to get in touch, we’ve got everything sorted for a smooth hand over.

Talks with council about a storage location are in the final stages and we’re still trying to get used to the new and more restrictive recycling scheme.

We had a very quiet start to the New Year with many people away on holidays, but we made an impact with the amount of litter cleaned around the streets surrounding Glen Waverley Secondary College and Glen Waverley train station. Items picked up included several dumped items of bedding which will be repurposed as cleaning rags and a useable windscreen shade which has been cleaned up and put to use!

Small Street beach area was our destination for our February clean. It was a beautiful sunny morning but quite windy, with lots of broken plastic along the tide line.  24.75kgs of rubbish collected: 55 recyclables collected and 1 syringe. Thanks to the 17 volunteers who were able to come along to help keep our beaches clean for our wildlife. This month we had 1 new member come an join the team, who has offered to launch an Instagram account for the Hampton Beach Patrol group.. Keep your eyes open if you are connected to Instagram and ensure to follow.
