LOS 3184 Elwood November 2017 Street Clean

LOS 3184 Elwood’s Magnificent Seven!

On what was perhaps a long weekend for some, seven members came along including two new members from further afield. Wonderful to have people join us when they can, in a cause we are committed to. The drizzle held off till we had finished, then sent us scurrying for shelter in a local café for well-deserved refreshments in fine company.

We collected 8.72 kg of litter: 463 cigarette butts and 39 drink bottles and cans, plus lots of other fragments of plastic and other litter. The plastic golden confetti spread about at the infamous Confetti Disaster of September was still in evidence amongst the grass of nature strips, so we were still cleaning it up!

LOS 3184 Elwood October 2017 Street Clean & Second Birthday
We collected 15 bags of litter with a total weight of over 18 kg: 1777 cigarette butts; 18 drink bottles and cans that could attract a refund if Victoria had a Container Deposit Scheme; thousands of items of litter. Well deserved cake and a great get-together afterwards.

LOS3184 - Elwood Street Clean September 2 2017

Thankfully, the rain held off (apart from a few sprinkles). Five of us collected nearly 11 kilograms of litter: 8 shopping bags stuffed full of rubbish - 852 cigarette butts; 14 bottles and 1 can; lots of confectionery wrapper fragments and advertising flyers. Even though some of these are paper, the ink is something we want to keep out of our waterways and the paper just makes our streets look unloved!

So far this year, LOS3184 has collected over 8000 cigarette butts from our suburb, to say nothing of all the other stuff. Elwood looks pretty clean – until you really look. But it’s always better after we’ve been active.

October 7th will be our second birthday - so come along and help us celebrate. We will be in Elwood Village – Ormond Road.

LOS 3184 Elwood August 2017 Street Clean

Lucky the sun shone today! 17 volunteers, including 5 champion children, collected 23.78 kg of litter from Elwood streets leading off in all directions from St Columba's church corner.

We covered approximately 4 km of roads and laneways working both sides (8 km of pavement!) Though the area looked clean to start with, our concern is that the recent rain had washed litter down the storm water drains - next Beach Patrol will see. Still loads of rubbish to gather up. Feature items (oh how we wish they weren't!): 819 cigarette butts, 30 bottles (glass & plastic), 21 cans. Vic Govt - Where's our container deposit scheme? Accumulations of litter around building sites - lunch packaging, butts, drink containers. Problems with some blocks of apartments where bin lids were broken or missing >>> blustery wind blowing litter out. We will endeavour to follow up on this.

LOS 3184 _Elwood June 3 2017 Street Clean up

Cool, but clear morning and not too chilly. 14 volunteers, including 4 children and 3 new members.

Nearly 23 kg of litter collected with cigarette butts being most numerous, as usual. Concerns raised by members about the concentration of litter around work sites (development and street works).

LOS3184 - Elwood Street Clean May 6 2017

The sun shone for LOS 3184 this morning; our trusty 15 volunteers put in a great effort cleaning up around Elwood Shops and local streets. We were very happy to welcome five new members, including two more children. Two families from St Columba's Primary School made sure the streets around the school and church were so much cleaner than before we started.

Litter taken off the streets included: 714 cigarette butts, 38 bottles and 14 cans, lots of soft plastic fragments (lolly wrappers most commonly), lots of take-away coffee cups and lids, lots of real-estate advertising flyers, the plastic-coated cover from a pedestal fan! Our beautiful Port Phillip Bay, our local beaches and its creatures will be so much the better for our collective endeavour.

Unfortunately, the families had to go on to other activities so were not in the photo today, but it was wonderful that they were able to join us today. A huge thank you to everyone for such a great contribution - we hope others get the message illustrated by our action.

IT'S NO APRIL FOOL'S DAY JOKE _ we'd much rather have no litter to pick up! However, thanks to the efforts of six volunteers today, we collected 11.4 kg of rubbish in and around the shopping strip of Elwood Village, including nearly 2000 cigarette butts.

So Elwood is looking so much better.

Great to welcome Dick & Beth and to see Gina again.

Elwood 1st Cubs Environmental Warriors Next Gen
Working towards an Environment Badge, Elwood 1st Cub Scouts offered to conduct a local clean-up. In blustery conditions, the pack set off behind the Scout Hall, Angling and Sailing Clubs at Elwood Beach. They quickly became expert litter-spotters, working their way around the cafe, along Ormond Esplanade and back through the vegetation. After just half an hour and having gone no further than 200 metres from the hall, they covered a tarpaulin with all sorts of litter. Leaders and cubs were amazed at just how much they had cleaned up.

A fantastic effort by the next generation who will be entrusted with the care of our environment.
