Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186 Clean Up Australia Day

Twelve volunteers did a great job to remove litter from the reserve today despite the blustery conditions. Fewer waterbirds about due to the low levels while Melbourne Water works to deal with the upstream blockage.

Great going everyone.

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186

Fourteen volunteers did a great job to remove litter from the reserve today. We were delighted to see so many birds, but dismayed by the polystyrene so prevalent in the lake. We were able to show everyone our trophy for being nominated, along with LOS 3188 and Bayside BP groups, for the environmental organisation award, City of Bayside Australia Day. Another organisation took out the award, but it was fantastic to be nominated in our first year of action.

Two reports came in via Litter Stopper since our last group clean. Every little bit counts. One member cleaned up near where there had been a collision in parking bays. Lots of plastic fragments that had not been attended to by those involved. The other member cleaned up a bag of bottles and cans washed into the creek and lake by recent rains. Lots of polystyrene in the lake.

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186 January 2020

In the face of catastrophic devastation in so many parts of Australia, the importance of caring for our creatures by keeping our own environment clean is underscored.Members will be doing other things as they are able.

Several new members joined in our January clean. Our volunteer time raised $300 in credits for the Ecocentre’s Living Waters projects to improve water in the catchment of Elster Creek.

We removed 16 kg of litter from the reserve: much of it soft plastic fragments and take-away food litter.

We hope the young wildlife are better able to thrive now.

Elsternwick Park Love Or Street: final clean for 2019

A smaller group than usual, with nine volunteers defying a chilly wind. Still plenty to clean up: old, deteriorating umbrellas; lots of soft plastic fragments trapped by the vegetation following recent windy weather; still finding old and fresher bottles and cans from drinkers using the reserve. Eels were spotted in the lake in the reserve.

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186 - a safer Nature Reserve for our creatures

Seventeen volunteers ignored the looming clouds and removed 27 Kg of litter from the reserve today. Drink containers were clustered under a clump of trees, perhaps a party after dark. With young birds of all sorts now fledging and learning to fend for themselves, we’re glad we cleared these threats.

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street Oct 2019

The Nature Reserve seems a lot cleaner now. Since launching in May, the group and individual members at other times have removed 100 kg of litter from the Park. This means all our special creatures are much safer from entanglement and from ingesting plastic or other harmful items. Creatures downstream in the Canal and Port Phillip Bay benefit too.

Great going everyone.

Elsternwick Park Love Our Street (EPLOS) 3186 August - great turn out

All smiles: well-deserved! Great to see everyone helping to remove so much litter from our Nature Reserve. Doubly important as Spring approaches and breeding season will see chicks and small creatures vulnerable.

Fantastic to have new members join us and to welcome Bayside Mayor Michael Heffernan with Councillors Sonia Castelli and James Long.

Lots of beautiful birds around to thank us
Lots of pretty fungi spotted, indicating a healthy environment
