LOS 3184 Elwood May 2018 Community Clean
A bit cool but fine for our six volunteers today.  Our sea creatures are so grateful. See the not-so-crabby crab - photo courtesy of Sheree Marris's gallery from Melbourne Down Under.
We collected 5.4 kg of litter - small by weight, but significant if we consider the many small fragments we prevented entering Port Phillip Bay. This included 545 cigarette butts (almost 300 from the grass beside Seven-Eleven), 10 drink containers (bottles & cans) and lots of small plastic fragments.

It was a pleasure to welcome Sharron from the Port Phillip Ecocentre who came along to promote the Living Waters project. Similarly, we welcomed Deborah who is considering taking action in Ripponlea.

LOS3184 - Elwood Street Clean April 7 2018

Thanks for Cleaning up Elwood Village today

The sun shone for our seven trusty volunteers who cleaned up around Ormond Road shops today. It was a great pleasure to join forces and to welcome Kathy who is looking to start a LOS chapter in Cheltenham.

We collected a total of 28 kg of litter - that's a large total for a small group. This included 725 cigarette butts, 30 drink containers (bottles & cans) and lots of small plastic fragments.

We raised $175 in water credits for schools and individuals seeking to install water tanks or rain gardens in Elster Creek and Werribee River catchments. We also sold a few Elwood Cups ( re-useables) and received some donations. All good things.

Sorry - so much going on that I forgot to take a photo - but the dolphins say it all (courtesy of Melbourne Down Under - Sheree Marris gallery)

Next date: Sat 6 May - Elwood (west) shops. 9.30 am Might change our meeting point to near the Turtle - let me know what you think.

LOS3184 - Clean Up Australia Day March 2018
Our twelve volunteers, including three eagle-eyed children, made sure the streets around the Tennyson Street shops were cleared of lots of litter. Our volunteer time earned $350 credit for the Living Waters program operating out of Port Phillip Ecocentre, so we helped individuals and schools with funding for rain tanks and rain gardens.

We collected: 9 kg of litter, 500 cigarette butts, 21 drink containers (bottles & cans) and lots of small plastic fragments - sad to say "as usual".

LOS 3184 Elwood February 2018 Street Clean

Fabulous volunteers and Champion Children

Great effort from our eight volunteers today. Gorgeous day to be out with like-minded people caring for our local environment.

Things always seem clean around Elwood - and then you really look! We made a great difference today - hundreds of small pieces. These are such a danger to sea creatures and birds as they can be swallowed and lead to painful deaths.

We collected: 9.1 kg of litter, 504 cigarette butts, 37 drink containers (bottles & cans) and still some of the plastic confetti from the disastrous scattering at a wedding last September. Hope you like the message from Eloise and Clare.

Save the date: Sat 3 March - Tennyson St Shops. Hope you can all attend as City of Port Phillip are likely to be filming us to promote volunteering in the municipality.

LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean: January 6 2018

Five volunteers got in ahead of the worst of today's heat. Great to welcome a new member, too.

Elwood Village seemed pretty clean compared to other times we've been active there. Let's hope it stays that way when people return after the summer break.

Nevertheless, we still collected: 3.5 kg litter, 674 cigarette butts, 11 drink containers (bottles & cans) and lots of small fragments. Our bay creatures and beach-goers will be grateful.

Thanks also to Bunker cafe for recognising our efforts with a discount on our refreshments.

Save the date: Sat 3 Feb - Elwood (west) near St Columba's church

LOS3184 - Elwood Street Clean December 10 2017
The sun shone us today for our final street clean for the year. Thanks to those who were able to make it at this time - rescheduled after last weekend's wet weather. Great to have a chance to catch up and celebrate our year's achievements and growing friendships.

LOS 3184 Elwood November 2017 Street Clean

LOS 3184 Elwood’s Magnificent Seven!

On what was perhaps a long weekend for some, seven members came along including two new members from further afield. Wonderful to have people join us when they can, in a cause we are committed to. The drizzle held off till we had finished, then sent us scurrying for shelter in a local café for well-deserved refreshments in fine company.

We collected 8.72 kg of litter: 463 cigarette butts and 39 drink bottles and cans, plus lots of other fragments of plastic and other litter. The plastic golden confetti spread about at the infamous Confetti Disaster of September was still in evidence amongst the grass of nature strips, so we were still cleaning it up!

LOS 3184 Elwood October 2017 Street Clean & Second Birthday
We collected 15 bags of litter with a total weight of over 18 kg: 1777 cigarette butts; 18 drink bottles and cans that could attract a refund if Victoria had a Container Deposit Scheme; thousands of items of litter. Well deserved cake and a great get-together afterwards.

LOS3184 - Elwood Street Clean September 2 2017

Thankfully, the rain held off (apart from a few sprinkles). Five of us collected nearly 11 kilograms of litter: 8 shopping bags stuffed full of rubbish - 852 cigarette butts; 14 bottles and 1 can; lots of confectionery wrapper fragments and advertising flyers. Even though some of these are paper, the ink is something we want to keep out of our waterways and the paper just makes our streets look unloved!

So far this year, LOS3184 has collected over 8000 cigarette butts from our suburb, to say nothing of all the other stuff. Elwood looks pretty clean – until you really look. But it’s always better after we’ve been active.

October 7th will be our second birthday - so come along and help us celebrate. We will be in Elwood Village – Ormond Road.

LOS 3184 Elwood August 2017 Street Clean

Lucky the sun shone today! 17 volunteers, including 5 champion children, collected 23.78 kg of litter from Elwood streets leading off in all directions from St Columba's church corner.

We covered approximately 4 km of roads and laneways working both sides (8 km of pavement!) Though the area looked clean to start with, our concern is that the recent rain had washed litter down the storm water drains - next Beach Patrol will see. Still loads of rubbish to gather up. Feature items (oh how we wish they weren't!): 819 cigarette butts, 30 bottles (glass & plastic), 21 cans. Vic Govt - Where's our container deposit scheme? Accumulations of litter around building sites - lunch packaging, butts, drink containers. Problems with some blocks of apartments where bin lids were broken or missing >>> blustery wind blowing litter out. We will endeavour to follow up on this.
