LOS 3184 Elwood Community Clean 4 May

Though rain threatened, nine volunteers spent an hour cleaning up around Elwood shops near St Columba's, towards the beach and canal. More litter was collected than three months ago when we were last in this area! Glad we saved this from flowing into Port Phillip Bay where it would certainly harm creatures.

Love Our Street 3183 & 3185 April 2019

Our group of 14 volunteers collected a massive 24 kg again today: 142 drink containers that could be returned if only we had a Container Deposit Scheme; 1450 cigarette butts and one syringe. Just think of how much you helped the ocean today too! Great job everyone!

LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean April 6th

Six volunteers came along on a gorgeous Saturday morning. School holidays and several members were away.

We collected 5 kilograms of litter, including a horrible 1230 cigarette butts. That's double than the same time in the same area. Grrrr! Hotspots in garden beds near cafes and near development sites. We also collected 11 drink containers.

Despite it being very hot and windy, 14 volunteers put in to make Balaclava cleaner than it’s been for years. It was great to see familiar faces and to welcome new members.

LOS 3184 Elwood Clean Up Australia Day

Love Our Street Elwood got in a day early: it wasn't too hot. Members came and went at different times, but we gathered lots of litter. More bottles and cans than we'd seen for a long time. We welcomed a new member, too.

LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean

Prevented from entering the sea:

9 bags of litter (think: hundreds of pieces)

8 kg of litter in total

33 drink containers that should be returned vi a Container Deposit Scheme if Victoria had a CDS!

255 cigarette butts - about half the number compared to the same time last year. Can we hope this is a downward trend?

Love Our Street 3183 & 3185 Ripponlea Village Clean

Happy New Year Ripponlea. With many people away, it was rather quiet in Ripponlea Village.

Still, our collection today included hundreds of small pieces of litter, including 350 cigarette butts. Butts are the single most littered item globally according to Blue Ocean. Small items of litter may seem insignificant. However, according to the Port Phillip Ecocentre’s research, microplastics make up 74% of the 828 million pieces of litter entering Port Phillip Bay annually. If we can keep our village clear of these things, we are playing our part.

Keep up the good work everyone, wherever you are over summer.

LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean: Happy New Year Jan 6 2019

Great to welcome people back for 2019. Eleven members were able to come along.

As usual, Elwood looked pretty clean. Still, we gathered 10 kg + of litter from the Village: 1288 cigarette butts, 28 bottles and cans that should be returned via a Container Deposit Scheme (when oh when Victoria?) and hundreds of small plastic fragments (wrappers, cable ties, hair ties, broken hard plastic, polystyrene foam….).

Litter hotspots near building sites – if you see an issue, please report it to Port Phillip Council using the Snap Send Solve app, making sure the GPS reading gives an accurate address – or note it in the text of your report.
