The month of July was action packed, with Beach Patrol running a 'Splash Trash' marine debris art workshop in Port Fairy, an exciting funding announcement, a visit from Bio-Security and loads of trash washing in on the tides to keep us busy. We now have an action plan for our cotton bud social change campaign and will be continuing our work on that over the coming months.
We had some unusual beach finds including bags of onions and garlics and individual chilli’s washing up (a local tried to re-plant the garlics and onions without much success). We also had a number of suspicious foreign food items wash-up which were a quarantine issue and so we had a visit from bio-security who came and collected them off us.
This month we involved Deakin University Marine Biology students in a cleanup at Shelly Beach in lieu of a community group clean-up. There were also many individual clean-ups after the big tides brought us so much trash to collect.
Our most common plastic item was Nurdles at 11753, followed by plastic remnants at 9193.
Forty-three volunteers undertook 18 clean-ups to remove 24137 items of trash weighing 156 kg from seven beaches.
Out of interest, here are our stats from the Deakin Uni Group cleanup:
