Entries for January 2015

After just one hot day a visit to the beach shows the state of our littering attitude and how bad we need a cash for containers scheme in place.

In approx. 100 m along the Port Melbourne beach today we picked up approx. 25 bottles and cans that had been left there from last night.  Other passers by were also disgusted.  One said "It's not that hard is it to take it home".

Ironically there are always enough littered plastic bags too to put the littered bottles in.

We had 8 enthusiastic volunteers for our January Beach Patrol at Mentone.

There seemed to be more cigarette butts on the shore line than usual this time but not as many plastic fragments.

It seems odd how some days one type of thing will get washed up and different things on another.

Williamstown 3016 Impromptu Clean up

A group of people from 3106BeachPatrol and Scab duty ( a sister organization in Williamstown) went to a less popular beach to collect rubbish there.

The beach (a sanctuary!)has little sand but more Mangrove type trees.

In one hour they collect 1260 bottles and cans!   This just show again how badly Victoria needs a cash for container scheme.  Our govt needs to come a visit these sites rather than listen to lobbyists.

After one hour we had 7 bags of rubbish and 39 bottles and cans.

Bottles and Cans Pollute Port Melb Beaches

The first clean of the year started off with a load of litter including a haul of cans and bottles.  With about 25 volunteers turning out in spite of a light drizzle at the start, we split into two groups to clean two beaches.  This made quite a difference as a lot more litter was collected.

The photo says it all.  A littered Australia
